Children capabilities: A structural equation model for India

نویسنده

چکیده

This paper has two main goals. The first is to provide a framework for studying children well being utilising a capability approach. A list of capabilities for children in developing countries is drawn and its methodological justification is provided. The second aim is to suggest an econometric model to estimate child well being, utilising the list of capabilities provided in the first part of the paper. The suggested econometric model is a Multiple Indicator Multiple Causes model (MIMIC), belonging to the class of Structural Equation Models. This model allows the use of functionings as indicators of well being and to link well being to exogeneous causes. The model is estimated on a sample of children from the central states of India. © 2006 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. JEL classification: I32; C35; O53

To what extent fuzzy set theory and structural equation modelling can measure functionings ? An application to child well being

This paper explores the possibilities of using fuzzy inference system and structural equation modelling to measure capabilities both at a theoretical and empirical level. Fuzzy set theory has been already used to measure functionings (Chiappero Martinetti 1996, 2000, Lelli 2001) while structural equation modelling has not been used till now (apart from some preliminary results on children well ...

Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) in Health Sciences Education Researches: An Overview of the Method and Its Application

Introduction: There are many situations through which researchers of human sciences particularly in health sciences education attempt to assess relationships of variables. Moreover researchers may be willing to assess overall fit of theoretical models with the data emerged from the study population. This review introduces the structural equation models method and its application in health scien...

Estimating Basic Capabilities: A Structural Equation Model Applied to Bolivia

— This paper proposes a suitable theoretical framework for operationalizing the capability approach using the latent variable methodology. A structural equation model is specified to account for the unobservable and multidimensional aspects characterizing the concept of human development and to capture the mutual influence among different capabilities. The model is applied to Bolivian data for ...
